Relaxation Techniques

When I swim the sidestroke I feel all twisted up and much more concerned about staying afloat than I am about keeping my legs together, and making sure my left arm isn’t too far below the surface while keeping my right arm close to my body.  Oh yeah and looking sideways, not up.

When I mentioned my concern about sinking, Bob had me try the sink test.  Curl into a ball, grab your ankles, and see what happens.  Eureka!  I float!

Then he had me floating both vertically and horizontally.  If I tilt my head back while floating vertically, I don’t sink.  Crazy!

Benefits: Sidestroke is more relaxed since I have a better sense of what my body will and will not do.  And I get to put in a good word for Bob, something which I have neglected up to this point.
