Rainbows

January 2nd, 2010

A rainbow is formed by the separation of light waves passing through water. Very concrete and predictable in that sense.  But it is also a symbol of hope.  And it’s beautiful.  I was going to write a dialogue contrasting the abstract and the concrete, and I was going to start with rainbows.  Life seems like a funny mix between the two of them and I’m trying to figure out how to express that.

Then I was watching a Deep Space Nine episode tonight, and I thought I could have just stolen Commander Sisko’s comments to Kira about whether or not he is fulfilling a prophecy or not- She sees three vipers, he sees three Cardassian women, she sees a sword of light, he sees a comet, she sees the Emissary, he sees a Star fleet captain.  Both characters seem pretty convinced that the prophecy was in fact fulfilled by the end, but the episode ends before Sisko gets to try to work though that.

Once CJ pointed out to a group of males (who were looking somewhat askance at the idea of women making decisions) that there were other things that were important besides just logic- love matters as well.  Love is abstract….I wonder if I know what I mean by abstract.

Maybe I mean that we have to use everything we have when we think about life.  I can’t just look.  I have to listen and sometimes touch, and think about what is behind it all, what it all means.

I’d like to sit here ruminating on all of this, but I’m really tired…
