Reverse Culture Shock

July 12th, 2009

I’ve been telling people that you know you have been far away from home when your plane flies into Miami and the palm trees look normal.

Even riding home from the airport at one in the morning was shocking. 175 was so big and smooth. All of it bothered me. The sidewalks in Portachuelo are way off the ground- maybe a foot and a half- sometimes there are two steps to get up or down them.

In a residential area like mine every house would have a wall around it, so I guess there is a feeling of space here that is not there. I almost wanted to cry just because it was all so different. And I’ve gotten used to the apostrophe being located elsewhere on the keyboard…

And it’s so quiet here.  Church, home, everything.
