Educators believe that persons are more likely to learn if their brains are noting connections between that which they are learning and what they already know. I sometimes think this is why I am so poor at geography. I memorized maps as isolated facts and now find I have retained relatively little knowledge in that area.

Augustine’s writing forces me to think through theological connections. In my mind, while the attributes of God are all linked to God, they are not necessarily linked to each other.

Theology texts state that God is immutable, that He cannot change. It had not occurred to me that this must be so. If God could change that would imply that he could either become better or worse, which in turn suggests that He is not currently perfect or that He could become less powerful. It is harder to trust a changeable God, either for salvation or for our continued existence. A changeable God could grow weary of us one day and creation would simply cease to be…
