The book I’m reading

February 10th, 2007

is in Spanish.  None of the characters are behaving properly.  The heroine locked herself in her room four days ago.  The hero has sunk into a deep gloom.  The priest is plotting against the hero.  The hero’s aunt meanders blithely along, certain that everything will turn out well.

Chapter titles are along the lines of “More Threats” or “It was a Disaster”.  And I know the hero will be murdered, because, believe it or not, a footnote at the bottom of the page just happened to mention it.

The book attempts to deal on some level with the clash between reason and religion.  But the author was an educated, rational person whose main impression of religion is that it is first intolerant and second irrational.

I guess that’s why I’m so frustrated right now!

  1. This book is for a class, right? What are the assignments? Writing a parody could be really funny.

  2. Well, from every perspective but the insider’s, our religion is both irrational and intolerant. It sounds as if the author is being pretty consistent with the Rational Tolerants, according to us. So, naturally you’re encouraged in your faith. …Right?

Hey, I just finished the W. of W-T-W., speaking of irrational, intolerant religions and frustration.

  3. Kiki- Yes, it’s for a class. I have to write papers comparing the books and movies. And I can’t imagine trying to write a parody in Spanish!

Tara- I think the intolerance objected to in this book is the fundamentalist type, the type that says, “You disagree with me. Therefore you are wrong and I hate you.” In this novel, the fundamentalists happen to be 19th century Spanish Catholics, and they can’t tolerate atheists and Protestants. There are no atheists or protestants in the book, but an accusation is enough to get heroe in trouble…he ends up dead. It was a really good book…there were times when I couldn’t put it down!

What is the W. of W-T-W?

  4. Thou must needs have more than an abbreviation to comprehend, sister?
