The Purpose Driven Run

December 5th, 2006

While gazing longingly at the French I course offered in the HCC catalogue, my eye was caught by another ad announcing the National Half Marathon. Normally I pride myself on being unmoved by advertising, but last night I mapped out a training schedule. I just might sign up.

The goal would be to run the half-marathon at a pace not exceeding 11 minutes per mile. This means remaining injury-free, which in turn means stretching and icing, acts dull enough to discourage all but the most determined.

Today I left school promptly, put on lots of layers, stretched, ran, stretched more, and iced. During my run I found myself speculating on the steps necessary to create this level of drive and ambition. I suppose it can’t really be reduced to a universal formula, though. Too bad…

  1. Ah, mais le francais est plus facile than running 13 miles and wasting all that ice. However, if you will consider moving up here I’ll join you (and get you a deal on some ice).
