“truth is gained by patient study, by calm reflection, silently as the dew falls”

-John Henry Newman

well, it certainly isn't gained by jumping to conclusions, although i think there may be more to it than study and reflection--what about the work of the spirit??

Wow, Jess, you know your Newman well. The rest of the quote is "- unless miraculously given - and when gained it is transmitted by faith and by 'prejudice.’" I'm not quite sure what it means to transmit (moral) truth by prejudice.

I have not read much Newman, but he does seem to have a way with words. I really like the description of truth coming like dew. It is the type of poetical language you normally don't find in scholarly writing.
